Types of Red Wine : Shiraz Wine FactsShiraz is a popular type of red wine. Get tips on what aromas to look for in tasting Shiraz wine with this free wine tasting video.

Hi, I'm going to tell you about a grape called Shiroz. You can also call this "Shiraz." And if your wine is Shiroz or Shiraz, it's also Sirah. Those are the same names for the same grape.

Sirah is what they call it in France. Shiraz is what they call it in Australia. Shiroz is the way some Australians pronounce it, and Sirah is also what they call it in California and Texas and other wine producing regions. So it's the same exact wine. So, whether it's Shiraz, or Sirah or you like to say Shiroz, it's always going to be a big, bold, dry red wine.

It's going to smell like two things, fruit and spice. In the bottom of the glass, blackberry, blueberry, cranberry, clove. Top of the glass, every kind of spice imaginable, black pepper, cumin, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, you name it. In the middle of the glass though, you're going to get something very interesting. You're going to get a little bit of orange peel. Now we don't usually don't talk about citrus in red wine, but it's definitely possible in a Sirah. And you're also going to get a little bit of a floral aroma, especially lavender. Okay, all that sounds good so far.

There's one other thing you might get in a Sirah that you didn't expect in a red wine, and what you want to do is swirl your glass, hold your nose about an inch above the rim of the glass, lean over and smell and look for the aroma of tar. That's right, tar. Just a little bit, but that'll give it away that it's a Sirah. Now don't worry, the wine is not going to taste like tar, the aroma will go away very quickly, but it'll tell you that this is a Sirah. Sirah is a big bold, fruity, spicy wine that can go with big, bold flavors. Grilled meat, grilled kabobs, barbecue foods, hard cheeses, big piles of mashed potatoes. They're all great for Sirah. And a lot of people like to drink it just by itself also, it's very popular. The versions from Australia tends to be nice and smooth and good for sipping on their own. So enjoy a Shiroz, I know I do.
